What is SEO???????

4

Basic search engine optimization (SEO) is fundamental. And essential. SEO will help you position your website properly to be found at the most critical points in the buying process or when people need your site.

What are search engines looking for? How can you build your website in a way that will please both your visitors/customers, as well as Google, Bing, and other search engines? Most importantly, how can SEO help your web presence become more profitable?

During the Introduction to SEO session at SES New York, Carolyn Shelby (@CShel), Director of SEO, Chicago Tribune/435 Digital, fully explained the extreme value SEO can deliver to a site, and stressed the importance of basic SEO using the following analogy:

What is SEO, Exactly?

The goal of foundational SEO isn’t to cheat or “game” the search engines. The purpose of SEO is to:

  • Create a great, seamless user experience.
  • Communicate to the search engines your intentions so they can recommend your website for relevant searches.

What is Ecommerce?

3.5

Electronic commerce or ecommerce is a term for any type of business, or commercial transaction, that involves the transfer of information across the Internet. It covers a range of different types of businesses, from consumer based retail sites, through auction or music sites, to business exchanges trading goods and services between corporations. It is currently one of the most important aspects of the Internet to emerge.

Ecommerce allows consumers to electronically exchange goods and services with no barriers of time or distance. Electronic commerce has expanded rapidly over the past five years and is predicted to continue at this rate, or even accelerate. In the near future the boundaries between “conventional” and “electronic” commerce will become increasingly blurred as more and more businesses move sections of their operations onto the Internet.

Business to Business or B2B refers to electronic commerce between businesses rather than between a business and a consumer. B2B businesses often deal with hundreds or even thousands of other businesses, either as customers or suppliers. Carrying out these transactions electronically provides vast competitive advantages over traditional methods. When implemented properly, ecommerce is often faster, cheaper and more convenient than the traditional methods of bartering goods and services.

The MVC Pattern and PHP

4.3

The Model-View-Control (MVC) pattern, originally formulated in the late 1970s, is a software architecture pattern built on the basis of keeping the presentation of data separate from the methods that interact with the data. In theory, a well-developed MVC system should allow a front-end developer and a back-end developer to work on the same system without interfering, sharing, or editing files either party is working on.

Even though MVC was originally designed for personal computing, it has been adapted and is widely used by web developers due to its emphasis on separation of concerns, and reusable code. The pattern encourages the development of modular systems, allowing developers to quickly update, add, or even remove functionality.

Understanding MVC

The pattern’s title is a collation of its three core parts: Model, View, and Controller. A visual representation of a complete and correct MVC pattern looks like the following diagram:

How to put modules in Joomla articles

5

One of the handiest tools you can have in your Joomla toolbox is the ability to put the contents of a module right into the body of an article. (The article you’re reading now is using this method. See the message in the box right above this sentence? That’s actually content from a module being loaded right into this article.)

This can be a significant time saver, since you can create a module one time in the Module Manager and then simply place it into any number of articles on your site.

That means you wouldn’t have to set up that content individually in every article: you do the work once and then simply tell Joomla where you want that module to appear.

To show you how to do this, I’ll show you an example of using this method to put a newsletter sign up form right in an article.

Here’s a look at the end result:

Web Development key Skills

API Knowledge

A key tool for any budding web developer is API knowledge. It’s good to familiarise yourself with a variety of application interfaces. I started out using the Twitter REST API with PHP and CURL when twitter first launched the API to basically get a users tweets, pretty simple now I look back, but at the time it was the first time i’d done such a thing. As the development of social media continues this will increasingly open up opportunities to develop more and more applications that interact with one another and and make our daily chores more eventful.

Create a Powerful WordPress Lightbox Contact Form

4.5

When it comes to interaction on the many WordPress blogs around the world, most website administrators simply assume that the comments section appended to each of their posts will be “good enough” for their users. While those comment forms are actually quite useful, and they encourage the kind of user engagement that can really help boost a site’s search engine optimization, they are really not meant to replace direct user-to-author comment through WordPress.

Quick Tip: 7 Super-Handy PHP Functions for Beginners

4

Function 1: array_rand

Let’s start with a simple one. Ever want to get a random item out of an array? You might use rand or mt_rand to get a random number, passing 0 and the last index of the array as the min and max parameters; this will give you a random key that you can use to pull a value from your array.

However, there’s a way that’s a little bit quicker: array_rand. Just pass it your array, and it will return the random key.

Select Code
1
2
3
$sites = ["Nettuts+", "Psdtuts+", "Mobiletuts+", "Mactuts+"];
$k = array_rand($sites);
$sites[$k];

If you want more than one random value from the array, pass a second parameter identifying how many; you’ll get back an array of random keys.
