30 Bad Practices of Web Designers

Every once in a while you will come across a page that just doesn’t seem ‘right’. There are three elements of a website that can be harmed by bad practice:

  • The website lacks something in its design.
  • The content is written badly.
  • The search engines don’t like something about the site.

Considering the three points above, this article will explains the do’s and dont’s of certain design habits.

1. Using ancient markup

Websites link directly to technology, and technology is about keeping updated. In the era of XHTML, we need to keep updated with the standards to have solid websites. So instead of using that <br> tag, give the <br /> a spin. Know where to self close a tag or place the doctype. For a good resource for those beginning markup, HTMLDog has good tutorials to learn how it all works.

Bad:

  • Using deprecated markup
  • Choosing not to use a doctype
  • Using table based layouts
  • Self-closing tags that shouldn’t be self-closed

Good:

  • Using the latest and greatest markup that is fully-supported
  • Always using Doctypes
  • Using <div> tags for positioning
  • Using a CSS Stylesheet
  • Validating your markup with the W3C Validator

2. Choosing invasive or distracting backgrounds

backgrounds

When the internet started, people were so amazed that they were able to publish stuff publicly that they didn’t think about readability and presentation. Choose a background that is appealing but doesn’t distract the reader.

Designing For Android

But let’s face it. Android’s multiple devices and form factors make it feel like designing for it is an uphill battle. And its cryptic documentation is hardly a starting point for designing and producing great apps. Surf the Web for resources on Android design and you’ll find little there to guide you.

If all this feels discouraging (and if it’s the reason you’re not designing apps for Android), you’re not alone. Fortunately, Android is beginning to address the issues with multiple devices and screen sizes, and device makers are slowly arriving at standards that will eventually reduce complexity.

This article will help designers become familiar with what they need to know to get started with Android and to deliver the right assets to the development team. The topics we’ll cover are:

  • Demystifying Android screen densities,
  • Learning the fundamentals of Android design via design patterns,
  • Design assets your developer needs,
  • How to get screenshots,
  • What Android 3 is about, and what’s on the horizon.

Common Mistakes In Logo Design

1. Relies On Trends

Focusing on current logo trends is like putting a sell-by date on a logo.

Trends (whether swooshes, glows or bevels) come and go and ultimately turn into cliches. A well-designed logo should be timeless, and this can be achieved by ignoring the latest design tricks and gimmicks. The biggest cliche in logo design is the dreaded “corporate swoosh,” which is the ultimate way to play it safe. As a logo designer, your job is to create a unique identity for your client, so completely ignoring logo design trends is best.

Logolounge has a great section on its website in which it updates current logo design trends every year. Being aware as a designer of the latest crazes is important, mainly so that you can avoid them at all costs.
